What Do Adult Day Programs Provide? How to Choose An Adult Day Program
“Adult Day Services” are daytime programs designed to meet the needs of adults who need supervised care during the day while returning to their homes or the homes of their loved ones in the evenings. Regular use of the health and social services offered in these programs helps reduce the risk of hospitalization and provides access to health and social services in a supportive environment. Many family caregivers can continue working when they take advantage of adult day programs for their loved ones. · Disabled adults and elderly who are physically impaired, socially impaired, cognitively impaired or require personal care · Disabled adults and elderly who live with family and are unable to be left alone, but do not require 24-hour institutional care · Individuals who can benefit from professional services and social and recreational activities. In most states adult day services programs must be certified or licensed. The frequency of inspections varies from monthly to biennially. Programs certified to provide health services typically must meet additional requirements and may require additional monitoring such as by state or local Health Departments. What Do Adult Day Programs Provide? Adult day services offer an individualized plan of care to meet the needs of each person attending, often referred to as a participant. Participants attend on a scheduled basis, and services may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Participants typically pay out of pocket for services if they do not have long term care insurance. Some persons qualify for financial assistance through limited government funding such as Medicaid Waivers for Disabled Adults, Developmentally Disabled or persons with HIV, Veteran’s Administration, Older Americans Act (Title III) or a blend of budgeted state/federal funding (State Adult Day Care Fund). How to Choose an Adult Day Program It may be time to consider choosing an adult day program when someone you know: · appears unable to provide himself or herself with any structure for daily activities · is isolated from others for more than a few hours a day and misses companionship · cannot be safely left alone at home · lives with someone who works outside the home or needs regular time away from home for other reasons.
